“Exclusive: Keahole Airport Plans”

Approximately four million people will pass through the gates of Kona’s Keahole Airport in the year 1975, according to state Department of Transportation Deputy Director John H McAuliffe Jr. McAuliffe’s projection was joined by drawings of the new airport and confirmation that it will indeed serve as an overseas — or intercontinental — facility.
The deputy director, however, declined to discuss the runway’s eventual alignment but did say that a basic north-south alignment would require that state control some 8,000 feet of shoreline. That would be required regardless of alignment to accommodate future expansion to a duel runway. The state currently owns about 80 percent of the land needed for the project.
He said that three alignment alternatives are under consideration by the state and that finalization of the plans is “at least a month away.”
“Explosives for Honokohau”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Stewart Pacific construction have been unloading 300 tons of high explosives using a helicopter from a barge just off the shore of the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor site.
To date, the only test blasting has taken place, which moved some 2,000 cubic yards of earth and rock. Actual blasting of the harbor was to begin this week or next week. Ultimately, some 400,000 cubic yards of rock will have to be moved. In-shore blasting will take place first with offshore blasting done after the winter season.
